Back To School Backpack Safety Tips

Do you remember the days leading up to the first day of school during the summer? It felt like it would never come, but it slowly crept up, right? Those days are long gone for myself, but for many students in Towne Lake and Woodstock, getting ready to go back to school is right around the corner.
One of the many things that my mother was worried about after my first day of school was the weight of my backpack. It was just like clockwork. I would come home and every year she would say the same thing about how heavy it was and how it would ruin my back. When my backpack was tipping the scales at around 50lbs, she became very worried. My backpack problems were eventually becoming pains, as my day-to-day and athletic life were becoming effected by my daily load.

At Ribley Family Chiropractic, we are extremely aware of the homework and textbook loads that children in Towne Lake and Woodstock are bringing home, because our families are apart of the community as well. It is an issue that we address daily with our own families, so we decided to help you and your family as well. Here are a few things that you should examine before your student(s) start complaining about aching backs and shoulders:
How heavy is your child’s backpack? According to The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc., a child’s backpack should weigh no more than 15% of their body weight.
How is your child’s posture? A stooped posture is a sure sign of your child’s backpack weighing too much.
Does your child complain about back or shoulder pains, and/or tingling arms? Learning how to effectively pack a backpack can help reduce back pain and avoid health problems.

How to Fit a Backpack Properly for Your Student Our expert chiropractors show you how to prevent back aches, shoulder pain, and other symptoms resulting from improper backpack wear. Ribley Family Chiropractic in Towne Lake and Woodstock, GA is raising awareness before the new school year begins.

Ribley Family Chiropractic has declared July a “Back to School Backpack Safety” month. We will be offering free backpack checks and fittings for the entire month. In addition to backpack checks and fittings, we will also be ordering Airpacks for those who need them. Airpacks are a product that we believe in that uses a unique system designed to help cushion and redistribute weight across the back to the muscles that are better for load bearing.
